Assignment 4
Discuss the position of women in the 19th century as opposed to that in the 21st century in an essay of about 180-220 words.
Women in the nineteenth century lived in an age characterized by gender inequality. At the beginning of the century, women enjoyed few of the legal, social, or political rights that are now taken for granted. They had extremely limited control over personal property after marriage, they could not get higher education and they were expected to be under the shadow of their fathers and husbands.
ΑπάντησηΔιαγραφήThey had no choice but to work in order to help support their families. They worked either in factories, or in domestic service for richer households or in family businesses. Many women also carried out home-based work such as finishing garments and shoes for factories, laundry, or preparation of snacks to sell in the market or streets. This was in addition to their unpaid work at home which included cooking, cleaning, child care and often keeping small animals and growing vegetables and fruit to help feed their families. Often women’s wages were thought of as secondary earnings and less important than men’s wages even though they were crucial to the family’s survival.
Politics and government were matters for men. Women then ,were thought to be not clever enough to understand such things and so they were entirely excluded from the process. Women could not vote, no matter who they were and there were certainly no women in Parliament.
The 21st century has brought a new hope and has empowered women in a positive manner. Earlier they were under the shadow of a husband or a father, but now they have established their own identity and are independent. Education is an important key to success. Many women nowadays are well informed and educated.
The role of women has changed tremendously and they have been able to create a positive impression in the society. They have established themselves socially, politically and economically in almost every field. Women are no longer considered unfit or weak for military or for other defense forces.
In conclusion, women have struggled hard over the last few decades but still been able to successfully establish their own identity. Today’s women have patience and perseverance, which has helped them to succeed.Earlier, women were seen only as housewives who were just cooking, cleaning and taking care of their family. Today, along with handling tough clients at office, they successfully multitask at home too.
